Onsemi announces an ultra-low-power automotive-grade wireless microcontroller with Bluetooth® Low Energy connectivity.

The NCV -RSL15 is ideal for automakers, who increasingly favor wireless connectivity to reduce the cost and weight of redundant wiring as the number of sensors and in-vehicle communications grows. The new microcontroller also addresses the high security concerns resulting from more sensors and more possible attack vectors.

While the list of sensors and common functions in tire monitoring systems (TMS) and other sensing applications continues to grow, the power budget does not. At the same time, some applications now have 10-year battery life requirements. The NCV-RSL15 is EEMBC certified as the industry's lowest power secure wireless microcontroller with a proprietary Smart Sense power mode designed to use as little power as possible. Being able to save more battery directly equates to longer product life.

"The tiny size of the NCV-RSL15 makes it ideal for use in applications such as portable remote access devices and other space-constrained in-tire and in-vehicle locations," said Vice President Michel De Mey. As the number of access points increases, so does the number of potential attack vectors that must be protected against unauthorized wireless access to the vehicle's central body computer or central processing unit. The NCV-RSL15 offers the latest in embedded security via Arm® CryptoCell™ with hardware-based root-of-trust secure boot, many user-accessible hardware-accelerated cryptographic algorithms, and firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) capabilities to ensure future firmware updates and Deployment of security patches.

With its rich sample code library, a comprehensive and easy-to-use software development kit provides a springboard for application development.
