With the rapid development of autonomous vehicles, people pay more attention to the functional safety of vehicles. Because the components and systems of many emerging advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) platforms are very complex, which is more than that of the data center, it is crucial to ensure that the hardware system of the vehicle complies with various safety risk prevention and control standards.

In fact, many L2 and L3 level autonomous vehicles currently use data center components and system level chips (SoC), such as dedicated visual processors, GPUs and high-performance memory.

Classification of semiconductors according to ISO 26262

The ISO 26262 standard is intended to regulate the functional safety of autonomous vehicles. When the standard was first introduced, it did not involve much in the semiconductor field, but after much consideration, it was quickly adjusted to include semiconductors in the assessment scope to further ensure the functional safety of automatic driving.

According to the complexity of devices and necessary safety mechanisms, semiconductor products are classified into Class I, II and III. System integrators often classify memory as Class II devices (only a small number of operating modes/states need to be analyzed for security without internal security mechanisms). However, after in-depth understanding of the current DRAM, you will find that memory needs to have many unknown complex performance and functions to achieve higher performance with lower power consumption.

In addition, the vehicle memory not only adopts the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process, but also needs to increase the density on the premise of continuously reducing the cost. Micron believes that according to relevant standards, memory products used in the safety field should be classified as Class III complex semiconductors as processors, SoCs and GPUs. The design of Class III components shall fully comply with the requirements of ISO 26262 standard.

ISO 26262 ASIL D level certification

The ISO 26262 standard defines four different security levels from A to D in the risk classification system. The system with level A (such as tail lamp) has the lowest requirement for safety risk, while the system with level D (such as anti lock braking system) has the highest requirement for safety risk.

Meguiar LPDDR5 products were evaluated by Exida, a well-known professional company in the field of automotive safety, and obtained the ISO 26262 standard ASIL-D product and process certification, consolidating our leading position in the industry. ASIL-D product certification is the first certification of memory technology, and LPDDR5 is also the first ASIL compliant product of Micron.

Alexander Griessing, chief operating officer and chief security expert of exida, said: "In the past four years, Micron has invested a lot of effort in optimizing the development process to meet the highest ASIL D certification in the ISO 26262 functional safety standard. Micron LPDDR5 series products are based on functional safety, with innovative safety features far beyond the industry standard, and can be compatible with JEDEC specifications. The progress of these technologies and the debut of the first DRAM product that fully conforms to the ISO 26262 standard mark another milestone in the semiconductor industry and will promote The development of the next generation of reliable and safe automatic driving systems. "

Meguiar LPDDR5 ASIL certified products adopt the on-chip security mechanism, which provides system designers with advantages over conventional JEDEC standards, such as the ability to detect random hardware failure indicators at the ASIL-D level. Compared with traditional security mechanisms and strategies (using built-in ECC or redundancy to achieve necessary system level security goals), the security features of Micron LPDDR5 ASIL certified products can significantly reduce power consumption, improve performance and memory efficiency, and reduce circuit board area. Micron has always been committed to promoting the development of the automotive industry. We promise that the design and development of LPDDR5 products, like other Class III complex devices (such as processors, SoCs and GPUs), fully meet the ASIL-D certification requirements.

Meguiar has always been committed to promoting the development of the automotive industry

A few years ago, Micron's engineers set up a special safety team to ensure that we can design products and processes based on safety, especially to meet the requirements of ASIL-D system fault detection, which also confirms Micron's commitment to providing customers with first-class functional safety solutions. In addition, Micron also provides comprehensive security analysis data for existing QM products to support customer integration, establishes a global automotive system laboratory network around the customer's location, and provides remote virtual laboratory support for customers.

With our industry-leading ASIL-D certified memory, you can rest assured that you can design your next-generation ADAS platform with Meguiar's functional security portfolio. With the innovative random troubleshooting function of Micron, you can reduce the area of the circuit board, reduce power consumption and cost, and improve memory utilization and performance. Meguiar, make your design more powerful!
